While I couldn't disagree more with Senator Paul Wellstone's political views, I was quite saddened to see his life end so tragically along with others in his family. People in Minnesota lost a father, mother, sister, wife, brother, and friends. This was a time for people to come together, regardless of their political beliefs, and mourn the loss of an important figure in this country and to mourn the members of his family.
Instead, I was horrified to read descriptions of Tuesday's tribute to the deceased Senator. The event sounded more like a political rally than a funeral, and partisan politics were flying from the mouths of Democratic politicians without restraint. Is nothing sacred any more?
I could tell things were going to turn ugly as soon as I heard that Dick Cheney was being snubbed from attending the funeral. Turning away mourners based on their political affiliation or beliefs is a new low. All of us have friends and co-workers who do not share our own political beliefs. Can you imagine being told not to attend their funeral because of those differences? Will I be turned away from my own mother's funeral because she is a liberal, while I am a conservative?
Welcome to the new Democrats. If you want to know what the Clinton legacy has contributed, you witnessed it in full force on Tuesday. Everything, even a funeral, is politically motivated. Make no mistake about it. This is the new Clinton Democratic Party (CDP), and it is one of the most disturbing sites I have ever seen.
The new CDP is a disgrace. It's a party whose presidential candidate disrespectfully sighs and rolls his eyes during political debates. It's a party that illegally replaces losing candidates on election ballots. It's a party that runs political ads insinuating that its GOP opponent is gay. It's a party that doesn't even feign embarrassment when caught in extramarital affairs. And now, apparently, it's a party that uses a funeral as a political pep rally and campaign stump.
Democrats have allowed a vile element to take control of their party. While Democrats have never shared political views with Republicans, they at least used to have higher morals, class and dignity. The focus is no longer "what's good for my country?" The focus is now "what's good for me?" The party has become so selfish and power-driven that it is even willing to disgrace a man's funeral if it means political gains.
Conservative Republicans aren't alone in their disgust for Tuesday's events either. I heard from Democrats who were equally appalled by these events. If this were a Republican scheme, I wouldn't just be appalled. I'd be angry. And that's how decent Democrats in this country should feel right now too. Their party has been hijacked by a group of people who are making a mockery of Democrats everywhere. It's an embarrassment to their party and to this country.
This should be a call to arms for decent Democrats everywhere! Take back your party from the CDP before it pulls you and the rest of the country into its pit of immorality, selfishness, poor taste, and greed.
